Internship Opportunities
The Lincoln Recreation Center is the cornerstone of the parks and recreation department for the city of College Station. We offer a wide variety of facilities, programs and activities designed to improve the quality of life for all residents of our community. Residents can take advantage of services in the areas of youth programming, senior services, special events, and community outreach. The facility includes a gymnasium, game room, fitness room, multipurpose room, zero depth water park, and a 13,000 square foot covered pavilion. In terms of internships, we provide a “hands on” learning experience in a particular field of interest to facilitate an opportunity for students to receive training outside of the classroom setting.
Job Description
As a Recreation Assistant, I am in charge of making sure the facility is operating and functioning correctly. I am responsible for the supervision of recreation activities for various Parks and Recreation Department programs, facilities and events under the direction of a department supervisor. I assist with the planning, organizing and implementing recreation programs. These are my principal duties:
- Meet and greet the public and serve customers.
- Ensure and instruct patrons in the proper use of all equipment, supplies, and facilities.
- Provide responsible safety measures and adequate supervision of patrons during indoor and outdoor recreational activities.
- Inspect all equipment and supplies used daily and report any needed repairs.
- Teach and enforce all rules and regulations for activities, games and/or facilities.
Requirements and Qualifications
To be a Recreation Assistant, you must first fill out an application online. Qualifications include experience working with youth and people of diverse backgrounds, availability to work weekends and evenings, ability to work with only general direction and with minimal supervision and excellent interpersonal skills.
Benefits and Opportunities
Salary is $7.25 an hour. The position is part-time so it is not benefit eligible. There are some great opportunities to work with the community and learn how a city facility functions and operates.
Achievements
I have had the opportunity to take on leadership roles and learn about many aspects of the recreation opportunities available to a community. I have provided input when safety and planning needed to be addressed. I am currently working on an end of summer program for the kids enrolled in summer activities. I am working directly with my supervisor and a representative from the Southwood Community Center in the planning, organizing and implementation of this program.
